Sisterhood Talks

December 13, 2016 By Katerina Cronstedt Leave a Comment

My sister and I have a podcast, Sisterhood Podcast. We started it in 2015 when she got pregnant and we were living in different countries – Daria in Stockholm, Sweden – I in Moscow, Russia.

Our ambition is simple: a weekly diary to document our lives – thoughts, ideas and desires, for ourselves and our children.

One morning in November we were talking how we could expand the Sisterhood concept further, learn from not only each other, but also from our fellow sisters, who are balancing kids, family and work.

How do these strong and determined women build lives on their conditions, prioritize and compromise, stay sane and pull themselves together when it all breaks down.

We still live in a world where equality is not the norm, where women get paid less for same work, where women many times don’t have same opportunities as men. We want to learn from each other so we can combat and change this together.
This is how Sisterhood Talks idea was born.

And as we were on the phone, all fired up about which guests we would like to invite first, I literally bumped in to the first name on our list – Ebba Bucht Lugani. I hung up with my sister, told Ebba about the idea, asked if she would be our first guest and she said yes.

I remember showing her her name written in our messenger chat, thinking this is at the same time amazing and normal, how the stars align if you just formulate your wish clearly enough.

5 episodes are recorded and they will be published on the Sisterhood Podcast every 2-3 weeks. Find the first episode here or on your favorite podcast player. ❤️

This is what today’s recording looked like – at home with amazingly inspiring Emma Elwin, stylist and founder of Make It Last.

All about Backpacks

September 20, 2016 By Katerina Cronstedt Leave a Comment

I have a thing for backpacks. Actually I have a thing for all things practical: software, clothes, gear, food (I’m serious!) and pretty much everything else. Except art. And music. Though Spotify is pretty darn practical and I love it. So most of the time – practical is beautiful.

On occasions I sketch on the perfect backpack that will be the ultimate marriage between smart functionality and understated beauty, but right now I am searching for a smart and stylish backpack to carry my podcasting equipment.

I started looking for a traditional camera bag, like the Gura Gear 26, but now I think I’ll get just the padded inserts instead and put them inside a beautiful bag (function+beauty). These are the things that need to fit inside.

I am considering one of these backpacks:

Treesizeverse (can it be worn as a backpack though?), Ally Cappelino, Sandqvist or Mismo. And this Mulberry is beautiful but too small (24x30cm) and costs like a trip to the moon, this affordable Asos is also too small.

I have an older version of this Qwstion backpack, but the straps are just as thin in the new model. I understand that they need to move through the loops – but why not make the loops slightly bigger and pad the straps?

Now I mostly use my Muji foldable backpack (I have two of them) because they are super light and foldable. I jam it with kids swim school stuff, podcasting gear or weekend away clothes. Minimalism at it’s best.

A while ago a got a Alite Bike to Beach bag mostly because the strap solution is close to the one I have designed for my dream back pack, but the straps are in really thick leather and not comfortable at all. A laptop barely goes in there and the opening is just to narrow to search for stuff inside. But the loose straps are neat – I have carried wet towels from the beach as well as extra clothes.

While on maternity leave in Stockholm with our second son I used the Longchamp Pliage backpack and it is amazing how much stuff it fits. My husband carries an older version of this Tumi and seems to like it.

11-1

Does the Ergobaby count as backpack? The straps are the softest and the waist band does distribute the weight away from your shoulders to your hips in a very comfortable way. The Ergobaby Active is Number 1 on my “I just gave birth to a kid”- survival list.

My kids carry the classic Kånken, stylish, durable and light. For me it’s too much camping to take to a business meeting.

The search continues.

PS Even though this is a post about backpacks, I just wanted to add this Billingham camera bag and Billingham laptop case here for my own reference. They are nice, arn’t they? And it seems like some Billingham models can be turned into a backpack with this harness.

The Hotel Podcast

August 24, 2016 By Katerina Cronstedt Leave a Comment

I have been working in the hotel industry for over ten years and loved it from day one. Catering for human kinds basic needs (according to Maslow) – a safe place to rest, access to food and water – is an honor and a privilege.

In April I left Moscow and Katerina City where I have worked since 2006 and in June I finished my engagement in Katerina Hotel Orlando, since then I have been contemplating on my next move in the hotel sphere. I definitely will continue working with a concept we started over 4 years ago – Hotelean, but what can I do right now to stay in touch besides reading the news?

Since I am a keen podcast listener (here are my favorites), in the beginning of summer I searched for hotel podcasts and found.. three.

One of them is Fuel Hotel Marketing (love it) and the other is Hospitality Academy (loved episode 17: “Improving Housekeeping Labor Productivity”) and BookGreener podcast (niche) and of course there are some hotels that have their own podcasts, but nowhere can you listen to the movers and shakers in the hotel industry, the hotel managers, the hotel architects and designers, the middle management that always have amazing stories to share.

So I wanted more and it turns out I just have to do it myself.  Yey! In my planning are many ideas and I will share them later here and on the podcast specific website: The Hotel Podcast.

If you have any ideas, thoughts or questions – just put them in the comments below and I will answer.

Thanks for reading this!

/Katerina

My favourite podcasts

August 23, 2016 By Katerina Cronstedt 1 Comment

I am a keen podcast listener. Love the format, love all the knowledge (and entertainment!) that is out there – just a click away.

I listen when I drive, do the laundry, cook, watch the kids play at the playground, brush my teeth, I listen all the time.

Below is a list of me favourite podcats, I would love to hear which are your favorite ones!

In English

  1. The Smart Passive Income Podcast – Management & Marketing (Love episodes 227, 224, 219, 210)
  2. The Tim Ferris show – Investing (Love episodes 179 and 177)
  3. TGIM – Management & Marketing (15, 09, 10, 07, 05)
  4. Gretchen Rubin – I love her 1 min episodes

Also I listen to a lot of Swedish podcasts because while living in Moscow it has been a way to keep up with what happens in Sweden (which I consider my home country), I can relate to them and maybe they are easier to find. Here is the list:

  1. Breakit – Swedish startup news
  2. Sommar & Vinter P1 – Society & Culture
  3. Vetandets Varld – Science & Medicine Always interesting topics.
  4. Drama for unga – Kids & Family, Radio theater. We listen with my kids and love it.
  5. Saker Stil – Style & Fashion Fun listening, Ebba is great.
  6. Hjarnpodden – Natural Sciences. Little slow, but such interesting topics.
  7. Karriarpodden – Management & Marketing, I listen to some specific women who interest and inspire me. Loved episode 49.
  8. Ekot – News & Politics -Daily news.
  9. Framgangspodden – Management & Marketing

As everybody else – I loved Serial season one.

A while ago I was also really into The Startup and when a friend told me about a podcast she liked – The Mystery Show – I was pleasantly surprised to see it too was made by Gimlet media. Will add it to my top list or not.

Infographic of Types of data a hotel encounters every day

July 11, 2016 By Katerina Cronstedt Leave a Comment

I found this cool infographic about the many different types of data a hotel encounters every day. If you are in the business this overview will definetely be interesting! Check it out.

Previously I wrote about the systems we use at our hotels, though I did not devide them into Small Data, Big Data, Resources, Tools.
